When you show up to work with dark circles under your eyes, it doesn’t matter how toned your body is or that you’re dressed to the nines. There will always be that one coworker who will point out your tired appearance in the most tactless way possible.

It’s frustrating, especially when your dark circles have nothing to do with your sleeping habits. What causes dark circles under the eyes and how can you get rid of them?

Here are three things every guy needs to know about dark eye circles:

  1. The skin around the eyes is incredibly thin. It also doesn’t have many oil glands or fat tissue, making it prone to dehydration and a sunken appearance.

What Causes Dark Circles Under the Eyes?

Although a lack of sleep is often blamed for a tired appearance, sleep deprivation is far from the only cause of dark circles under the yes. Factors such as stress, age, genetics and lifestyle habits all play a role in the development of dark eye circles.

Smoking—If you needed any more reason to ditch your smoking habits, here is one more: Smoking is terrible for your skin. Apart from overexposure to the sun, it’s one of the worst things you can do to your skin.

In a 2007 study published in JAMA Dermatology, researchers had the rare opportunity to study twins to measure the effect of smoking on the skin. The twin who smoked approximately 52.5 packs of cigarettes a year had significantly worse skin aging compared to the nonsmoking twin (see claim: “…the twin with an approximately 52.5-pack-year smoking history showed more severe skin aging than did the nonsmoking twin.”)

The nicotine in cigarettes reduces microcirculation by restricting blood vessels. When blood vessels are restricted, they can take on a blueish appearance. The skin around the eyes is already super thin, which makes the blue/purple color even more noticeable.

Allergies—Do your dark circles appear during a specific season or after you eat certain foods? If so, they may be the result of allergies. According to a 2011 study published in Dermatologic Surgery, researchers found a low-frequency laser treatment to be highly effective and safe for the treatment of dark circles under the eyes (see claim: “Treatment of infraorbital dark circles using low-fluence 1,064-nm QSNY laser is safe and effective.”)
